Hola amigos!

Each one of us has a favorite movie that we can relate and can’t get enough of it. Why do some movies have that effect on us. I think our likebility depends on how we see ourselves in those characters, or that how a story seems believable or has a similar theme to our liking.

Today I want to talk about one of my favorite movies of all times and the reason why I love it so much. I’ll share a brief synopsis of the story. You can guess which movie I’m talking about. It might be one of your favorites. We’ll find out. Here’s a still from the movie.

Oskar Shell looking at the key he found in his father’s closet after his death

The movie is about a young boy, Oskar Schell, who lives with his mother Linda. He has lost his father, Thomas, in 9/11. A year later he finds an unknown key in his father’s closet. The boy determines to find out what does it open and that takes him on an unprecedented journey where he meets all kinds of people each with a story to tell. The movie ends on a bittersweet moment when he finds a final note from his father which says of how proud he is of his son for showing unbelievable bravery and wisdom and congratulates him on solving an expedition (a game that he and his father used to play, they called it the reconnaissance expedtion)

Did you guess it right? It’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

This movie is based on the book of the same name written by Jonathan Safran Foer. I am yet to read the book, but have heared a lot of good reviews about it.

What I liked in this movie the most is that what a simple story it had with such a powerful message to be brave and to stay strong for the inevitable passing off of our beloved ones.

Oskar has lost his father in 9/11 and how he handles his grief is remarkable for a nine year old boy.

His mother is played by Academy award winning actress, Sandra Bullock. She is brilliant in this movie with how she copes up with her husband’s painful death while a son who suffers from developmental disorders. He lacks essential social skills albeit he is very smart and determined to find the lock to the key. Their relationship gets strained after Thomas’s passing away. At one instance Oscar even says that he wished it should have been her instead of his father in the building that day, which he immediately regrets and apologises.

The final monologue of the boy seals the deal for me. He says,

“I am even glad to have my disappointment, which is much better than having nothing. My dad told me that New York once had a sixth Borough that floated away. They tried to save it but they couldn’t and it’s never coming back. As much as I want him to my dad is never coming back. And I thought I couldn’t live without him, but now I know I can. I think that would make my dad proud which is all I ever wanted.”

Besides the heartwarming story and powerful acting by all the actors, the soundtrack in this movie is very beautiful composed by two time Academy award winning composer Alexandre Desplat

Despite of the film’s serious subject, it had a few lighthearted scenes. My favorite one is the oxymoron wars between Oskar and his father.

To summarize my thoughts, I think this movie is a very beautiful amalgamation of different kinds of emotions from grief, pain, despair, angst, to love, humor, hope, and positivity.

Do watch it and comment below your favourite films and why you love them.

Bye!
